Look Heavenward

Those who find wisdom are fortunate; they will be blessed when they gain understanding. Profit that comes from wisdom is better than silver and even the finest gold. Wisdom is worth more than fine jewels. Nothing you desire has more value. With her right hand, Wisdom offers long life—with the other hand, riches and honor. Wisdom will lead you to a life of joy and peace. Wisdom is like a life-giving tree to those who hold on to her; she is a blessing to those who keep her close. (Proverbs 3:12-18)

It would not be wrong to think of wisdom as an application of knowledge obtained throughout some field of study, but God's wisdom isn't just book learning applied. If we are to understand God's wisdom, we are actually in need of the person of wisdom resident in our lives. Jesus is wisdom in the flesh. We need Jesus if we want God's wisdom. Our passage is saying that those who find Jesus are fortunate - they will be blessed when they gain his understanding.

We can search after things that 'add to' our lives throughout our entire lifetime and never find the same 'value' or 'worthiness' in anything we could amass here on this earth. All the book learning and worldly wisdom we can amass pales in comparison to God's wisdom. Whatever it is we desire above God's wisdom is really 'below' God's wisdom. Nothing can compare, so why do we find ourselves seeking after things that have inferior worth? Perhaps it is because we are so 'bent' on living independent lives and cannot fathom ever submitting to his presence or purpose.

Long live isn't achieved because we work out at the gym daily, drink protein drinks, and follow a regimented diet. While it may keep our physical heart healthy, our spiritual heart is in need of quite a bit of help that isn't found at the gym! We need God's cleansing and his softening of our hearts. This is most frequently accomplished when the person of wisdom comes to indwell our lives - it begins at the point we welcome him in, it continues a lifetime until we see him face-to-face. Riches and honor aren't physical things - they are spiritual things. We need to stop seeking them here on this earth and look heavenward instead. Just sayin!
