This is my prayer for you: that your love will grow more and more; that you will have knowledge and understanding with your love; that you will see the difference between what is important and what is not and choose what is important; that you will be pure and blameless for the coming of Christ... (Philippians 1:9-10)
The things that are important... What might those be in your life today? Do they change as we grow older? I think perhaps they do. As we "age" in our relationship with Christ, I believe we are challenged to see things in a different light. This is because our priorities change and that is because our focus moves away from "me, me, me".
The "important" things in life might just become the relationships we develop with one another. It could be we have been way too involved with things that really are unimportant, like career, hobbies, or other relationships that really weren't building us up in the right way. They may have fed our ego, but they did little to bring us closer to Jesus!
We might find ourselves noticing that some things or relationships we have been pursuing are less and less "satisfying" or that they hold no appeal any longer. That isn't by accident! God is at work revealing the shallowness of those pursuits. He wants to bring us into pursuits that will deepen our relationship with him.
As we realize the call towards these"deeper" things or relationships, we might begin to feel a pulling away from the ones that have kept us way too self focused. That isn't by accident, either. God's intent is for us to grow in his love and grace. Anything that holds us back from that intent may actually begin to be stripped away, leaving us with more and more room for Jesus. Just saying!
