Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from him, throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy. (Ephesians 4:21-24)
The old sinful nature is just a 'snag' waiting to trip us up if we don't cast it off once and for all. We need to let go of our past, including the desires and lusts of that way of life, and lay hold of this new way of living. Once we determine to do that, we will make strides in our Christian walk. The 'limping around' old lifestyle is done with - we now walk upright, strong, and with purpose like never before.
We put off the old nature - all its ways - and put on the new one Christ gives us. We cannot expect change if we don't get up and walk away from whatever it was that held us bound in our past. As long as we hold onto the things of our past, we will never be totally what God intends for us to be. Once filled with his Spirit, we take on a new purpose and the intent of our heart does a 180-degree change.
The Spirit comes to renew our thoughts and attitudes, not just our thoughts, but the emotional attachment we have to those thoughts (attitudes). Our attitude is learned - it becomes the way we view things in this life. Emotions, perceptions, values, and even the intentions of our heart are all learned. The events of life lead to these attitudes - we either embrace them, or we let them go. There are indeed some that we need to let go of so we can walk into the freedom that God intends for us.
We form 'feelings' toward sin when we are living in it. We also form 'feelings' toward Christ's freedom when we walk into it. We must determine which one of these 'feelings' we will submit to. With the help of the Spirit of God, we can let go of those that lead to sin and take on those that lead to life and godliness. So, don't despair when you hit a 'snag' in your walk. Ask him what learned 'attitude' you might just need to let go of entirely so you can walk anew in the way the Spirit desires. He won't disappoint. Just sayin!
