The Spirit [comes to us and] helps us in our weakness. We do not know what prayer to offer or how to offer it as we should, but the Spirit Himself [knows our need and at the right time] intercedes on our behalf with sighs and groanings too deep for words. And He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because the Spirit intercedes [before God] on behalf of God’s people in accordance with God’s will. (Romans 8:26-27)
We most frequently call out to God when we are at our weakest, don't we? You can actually tell that you are maturing in your walk with Jesus when you begin to seek him more and more, even when you are not experiencing some catastrophe or weakened spiritual, emotional, or physical state! God sent his Spirit into our lives so that we would have his help - in weakness and when we believe ourselves strong (even when we might not realize just how weak we are). This is especially important in times of seeking God - in times of prayer, when we don't know what to pray, or even when we don't know if prayer will do anything to change the situation.
God knows our needs and he gave us his Spirit to help us understand our needs even when we don't know them ourselves. If you have ever just sat there quiet before God, heart burdened and with the feeling of a heavy weight in you spirit, you know how 'helpless' you feel. You don't have the words to describe the emotions, your mind is all muddled, and you know that something needs to happen, but you don't know what. God's Spirit does! He will gradually help us 'unfold' what seems too hard for us to work through and will actually help us intercede for the intervention required.
He searches the heart - knowing the mind of God - bringing us to a place where we can actually begin to feel that weight lifted. We might not realize it, but the Spirit is at work in us even when we don't see him working. Allow the Spirit to begin to 'unburden' your heart, even with groans and sighs uttered because you don't have words to describe what you are feeling, and you might just find yourself turning toward confession at times, exaltation at others, and even just plain peacefulness that begins at your core working its way to your actions. Just sayin!
