But Lord, be merciful to us, for we have waited for you. Be our strong arm each day and our salvation in times of trouble. The enemy runs at the sound of your voice. When you stand up, the nations flee! (Isaiah 33:3-4)
If you have ever faced an enemy too fierce, too strong, or too intimidating, you know just how much you take great delight when you see the Lord step in, take control, and send the enemy packing. The more we observe what is going on around us in this world today, the more we realize we need a Savior more than anything else. We need a deliverer, a strong army, and all the hosts of heaven on our side, don't we? Every so often, we get a little too focused on what our enemy is doing, and we forget to look at what our Redeemer is doing. Chances are, we might just miss his movements because we are too overly concerned with those of our enemy!
Waiting on the Lord to 'move' or 'act' on our behalf is likely one of the toughest things for some of us who are type A personalities - those of us who like to have everything under control all of the time. Yet, we cannot control everything, try as we might. We will face challenges beyond our 'scope', although we may not like to admit it. The one thing we must keep in mind is that 'control' isn't really ours to maintain (or even attain). It is God's alone. That said, what do we do when the enemy is coming at us from all angles? We wait for God. Seems simple enough, doesn't it? Yet, it is likely the hardest thing we can be asked to do when we want to be in control of everything.
Do we wait silently, or with inactivity? No - we turn our eyes and hearts to him, reminding ourselves through prayer and praise that he is our strong arm and our salvation in times of trouble. We call upon his name and then we do what he prompts us to do. We don't 'solve' the issue, but we ask him to make us conscious of what we can do and then we act in obedience to the direction he brings. God is our strong arm - we lean into his strength because ours will falter. God is our salvation - he knows the trouble even before we realize it is upon us. So, seek him, listen for his still small voice, remind yourself who it is you serve, and then let his name echo as you remind the enemy who it is that you are trusting in! That name is ALL powerful. Just sayin!
