Let the flood come

I pray that your hearts will be flooded with light so that you can understand the confident hope he has given to those he called—his holy people who are his rich and glorious inheritance. I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us who believe him. (Ephesians 1:18-19)

Hearts flooded with light don't allow things to be hidden in dark places any longer, do they? In fact, they relish the freedom light brings. If you have ever tried to pick your way along in a dark place, trying hard to make out outlines of things that might be in your way, you know the perils of 'things hidden from view', don't you? The light gives us a certain freedom of movement - we don't have to be concerned with running into hidden objects any longer. In much the same way, God's light gives us an emotional and spiritual freedom that allows us to move unhindered by darkness.

The light brings with it a certain peace that doesn't exists when darkness envelops one's life. The light exposes what needs to be removed - those things that would otherwise remain hidden and be 'tripping points' in our lives. With those removed, we have a peace about our lives. We also know his light brings power with it. When we are living in darkness, it is as though our peace and whatever power we possessed is robbed from us. We live in doubt, worry, frustration, and there is often little 'freedom' as a result. The power of God resides within those who have chosen to make him Lord and Master of their lives.

Hearts flooded with light - mind, will, and emotions all flooded with his light. When our minds are 'sorted out' by God's Spirit, the thoughts that gave us so much angst no longer exert that same power over us. As those thoughts begin to be sorted out, there is a willingness to follow his voice and listen intently to his leading. Whenever we allow the light of his presence to begin to dim within, we struggle with issues in the area of our thoughts and will. Draw close to him once again and the light of his presence invades every space of our lives. Light is back and the freedom it brings returns.

There is nothing to fear when we choose to live in his light. There is much to give us concern when we are willing to allow the darkness of our sin to overtake us and envelop us in its hold. Confess the sin, invite the light in, and watch as God's peace settles around us. The more we invite light into our lives, the more we will enjoy perfect peace and rest in the assurance of his power within. Just sayin!
