I look to you for protection. I will hide beneath the shadow of your wings until the danger passes by. I cry out to God Most High, to God who will fulfill his purpose for me. (Psalm 57:1-2)
Where does God provide refuge? Under the shadow of his wings. A mother hen will call for her chicks, sheltering there under the cover of her wings for as long as any threat is nearby. The hen sacrifices her comfort for the protection of her young. Jesus sacrificed the 'protection' of his divinity to become the sacrifice for our sins. There is no better shelter from the 'threats' in our lives than the shadow of his wings.
Until the danger passes by. The ability to 'hide' under the shelter of his wings is always there, but it is especially needed when danger surrounds us. If you haven't learned to take shelter in his presence during the times when danger isn't pressing in around you, you will when danger imposes a threat! The chicks don't just shelter under their mother's wings when threats are around. They have learned that it is a place of comfort for them all the time!
Cry out to the Lord. The more we learn to voice our heart's hurts, happiness, hangups, and hallelujah moments, the more we will find that celebration of his presence gives peace to our weary and worn souls. God has a purpose for us - he will see to it that it is fulfilled. When all else seems to be in a muddle and we cannot seem to find the 'purpose' in the storm, we need to take heart for he never abandons his purposes.
Look to God for protection. God is our shield - in the battle. He is our shelter - in the storm. He is our defense - when threats we don't see come in numbers we don't fully comprehend. Look to him - this doesn't mean we just sit idly by and wait for his 'covering' to come our way. A mother hen actively seeks her chicks, but they also know it is safest when they run into her covering. They seek it out, even when no threat exists - because there are comfort and safety there. Just sayin!
