Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. (Romans 12:2)
But let God...
We allow a lot of things to influence our thought life, don't we? The more we let in, the more difficult it becomes to actually 'filter through' all that muddle. The moment we realize we have been entertaining way too much of this world's philosophy is the moment we begin to ask God to put his Holy Spirit in 'filter mode' over our thoughts.
The transformation God desires for each of us begins with a changing of the guard over our minds. There is nothing more transformative than the power of God's Spirit at work in our thoughts. When we allow his Spirit to guide (control) what comes into our minds, the more our actions will be transformed by the thoughts he actually wants us to dwell upon.
God's will isn't something we need to constantly struggle to know. He gives each of us a free will, but when we give that will to him, asking him to sort out all the choices, guiding us to the best of them, he does it. That doesn't mean that we immediately get a word from heaven in an audible voice. It may just mean that we see a choice as wiser than the rest and make it.
The customs and behaviors of this world add chaos to our lives. It isn't easy to let go of some of the chaos because we have become so accustomed to the 'muddle' we don't even see that it exists anymore. When we ask God to filter through the muddle, we might just begin to see how much those influences have been pulling us away from him. They have created 'internal noise' that we must filter through all the time. It is as though we need God's Spirit to do a whole lot of 'noise cancellation', isn't it?
Let God take the lead in your thought life, and your life will be transformed. The presence of his Spirit isn't optional for a believer - it is a gift we are given and one we should always lean into in order to sort through all the world's noise. Just sayin!
