You there yet?

If you make the Lord your refuge, if you make the Most High your shelter, no evil will conquer you; no plague will come near your home. For he will order his angels to protect you wherever you go. They will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone. You will trample upon lions and cobras; you will crush fierce lions and serpents under your feet! (Psalm 91:9-13 NLT)

If you make...these three words indicate some form of commitment on our part, do they not? Yet, God's part is astronomical in comparison to ours. He will see that no evil can overcome us, sending angels to protect us even when we don't see their protection. He will keep us from stumbling, even though the path is riddled with all manner of stumbling blocks and even a few 'roadblocks' meant to stop us in our tracks entirely. We will have supernatural strength when our human strength seems inadequate for the challenges at hand. All this when we commit and follow through on that commitment.

It is the follow through that is harder than the commitment, though. Remember what I said a few days ago about what our pastor shared - if we commit to do something more days than we don't, we are moving in the right direction? Well, how's that going for you? Have you been able to fulfill your commitment, whatever it may be that God asked of you this year, more days than you have not? If you are still moving in the direction of 'full commitment', you are likely not alone. Remember this: God doesn't mete out his goodness and grace conditionally - he does so unconditionally.

We make him our refuge - he becomes our shelter. Does he only shelter us on the days we remember we made that commitment? No, certainly not. He delights when we take that time to acknowledge him and spend time with him in his Word, but he doesn't send his protection away just because we miss a day. If you commit to make Christ first in everything you do, you can be certain that Satan will sit up and take notice that you made that commitment. He will create scenarios designed to draw us away from that commitment. We just need to be keen to recognizing his distractions as they come.

If you make... What place are you giving Christ in your life today? What time will you allow him to occupy? Where will you go to discover his truth in his Word today? Even five minutes spent reading his Word can seem like a struggle to those who haven't developed the daily habit of spending time with him, but don't give up on it. One verse in his hands is as powerful as a million angels watching over your life, my friends! It isn't about the 'quantity' as much as it is the 'quality' of the commitment we are endeavoring to develop. Just sayin!
