Barry Bonds reminds us, "Everyone in society should be a role model, not only for their own self-respect, but for respect from others." A role model lives as though everyone sees everything they do. In truth, there is a lot we do 'in private' that others don't see, but the 'parts of us' on display through our words, actions, and emotions is often what others will emulate or follow. We owe it to each other to actually behave in such a manner that will make others behave at their best, as well.
O Lord, you alone are my hope. I’ve trusted you, O Lord, from childhood. Yes, you have been with me from birth; from my mother’s womb you have cared for me. No wonder I am always praising you! My life is an example to many, because you have been my strength and protection. (Psalm 71:5-7 NLT)
Our life stands as an example to many - like it or not. The way we behave can actually cause another to desire Christ in their lives. If our faith is ingenuine - mere religious pursuit in words only - we aren't going to be encouraging others to follow Christ. We might actually make them turn the other way! The example we set today may set the course of future generations. Let that one sink in because it is the truth. What we tolerate as 'normal' today will become the 'norm' of the next generation.
Our life isn't our own - we are ambassadors of Christ. An ambassador represents the one who commissions them and works to protect the interests of the one they represent. They foster positive relationships between the one they represent and those who they are in contact with. As an ambassador of Christ, we have the unique opportunity to foster this closeness of relationship we have with Christ in the lives of others. We are called with a purpose - to represent Christ and to do so with integrity.
Too many today allow the meaning of being a Christian become 'watered down' as though it was just like any other relationship. This is not the case for the one who is wholly committed to following and serving Jesus. Their actions reflect the closeness of relationship they enjoy with Jesus. Their attitude is positive in the face of adversity. Their motives are unsullied by today's 'norms' and remain true to the truth taught in God's Word. As an ambassador of Christ, we stand as an example of God's standards, not this world's.
Let your life be a beacon. Be an example that others will not hesitate to follow. Be one who 'stands out' and leads with integrity. You never know, you may be the one that changes the course of your community simply by living as his ambassador. Just sayin!
