But even though a person sins a hundred times and still lives a long time, I know that those who fear God will be better off. The wicked will not prosper, for they do not fear God. Their days will never grow long like the evening shadows. (Ecclesiastes 8:12-13 NLT)
Virgil reminds us, "Time passes irrevocably". There is no 'getting back' what has passed. We might want to regain what has been lost, but once time passes it is impossible to regain it once again. This is why we must hunker down and get the most from each day we walk with Jesus. We aren't going to pass this way again!
A person might live a long life, but will that life be filled with the blessings and grace of God? To live long, prosper much, and 'get places' in this lifetime might bring some sense of 'fulfillment' to some, but to the one deeply in love with Jesus, the only 'places' they want to explore are those filled with his presence. The more we see the wicked prospering on this earth, the more we will desire to see him face to face!
A song by Jim Croce used to be quite popular in the 1970's. The words: "If I could save time in a bottle the first thing that I'd like to do is to save every day 'til eternity passes away just to spend them with you". The idea of capturing time in a bottle seemed whimsical, didn't it? Yet there are some other words in those lyrics that might have gone unnoticed: "But there never seems to be enough time to do the things you want to do once you find them." Isn't that so true?
Finding the 'things one wants to do' might just be one of the biggest blessings we can experience. We don't always want to do the laundry, but we do it. We don't always want to get in the car and head to work, but we do it. We don't always want to climb up into the combine tractor, but we do it. We might want to fish more, but don't get to do it. We might want to just hang out with family, but there never seems to be enough or 'the right time' to accomplish it.
Eternity exists, but what we do with today is also important. Time passes - make the most of every moment - especially those you enjoy just hanging out with Jesus! The more time passes, the more opportunities will 'expire' with that passing. The opportunities of today may not come again tomorrow. Will you make the most of each of those presented to you today? Just askin...
