Just another Bible Study

And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today. Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up. (Deuteronomy 6:6-7 NLT)

Is there ever a time or place when God's Word isn't right there? If we commit even a small portion of it to our memory, we carry it with us at all times. I know that I haven't memorized scripture like so many others have, some even doing a verse a week. Yet it is there when I need it - maybe not word for word, but God's Spirit brings it to memory within me. Commit yourself to the study of his Word and you will be amazed how it comes to light exactly when and where you need it most!

It is more than the 'study' of his Word that transpires, though. In that commitment to study it, we find our framework for living actually changes. We begin to prioritize things a little differently and our choices become a little clearer. We find the things that challenged us so much begin to challenge us just a bit less. The Word of God is powerful - time spent exploring it is never wasted time because it transforms us as we take it in and begin to 'ruminate' on it.

The instruction given to Moses all those years ago was to repeat the instructions he was given over and over again - especially within their households. Did that mean that they held a Bible study every night? Not likely, as they didn't have Bibles back then. It did mean that as the opportunity arose, they recounted what God had done in their day, celebrating the goodness of his grace and love with each other. They used 'teachable moments' to share his truth. They imparted his wisdom at times when it was most needed.

Maybe we make this study of his Word so much harder than it needs to be because we have believed Satan's lie that it is 'hard to memorize scripture'. God never tells us to memorize it - he tells us to take it in and allow it to begin its work within us. He tells us to commit ourselves to DOING what it says - not just being able to repeat what it says. The most important aspect of this passage is the 'wholehearted commitment' to his truth. As long as we are choosing God each day, determining in our hearts that we will follow him, we are allowing his truth to begin its transformative work. That is when our moments become 'teachable' moments. Just sayin!
