Let all that I am wait quietly before God, for my hope is in him. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress where I will not be shaken. My victory and honor come from God alone. He is my refuge, a rock where no enemy can reach me. O my people, trust in him at all times. Pour out your heart to him, for God is our refuge. (Psalm 62:5-8 NLT)
Our psalmist gives us insight into victory in our lives. He says it quite clearly: "Let all that I am wait quietly before God." Why? There is no greater hope than his protection and his 'oversight' of our lives. We might think it is a bit of a waste of time to take time each day to center ourselves on him, studying his Word, and just getting his insight. If we want a life filled with the 'unknown' and 'chaos', this might be the way to go. If we want one of order and insight, we might want to try waiting quietly before him for even a little while!
Waiting doesn't mean we aren't doing anything. It means we are centered on the task at hand. There is an object of our attention - we don't let up on being attentive just because we are waiting. Quietly waiting doesn't mean there is utter silence. It might mean we just 'quiet the distractions' so we are able to hear from him. A fortress isn't a 'silent place' - it is teaming with activity, but it is purposeful activity. Our lives aren't always going to be 'orderly', nor are they going to always be 'quiet', but they can be 'centered'.
Let ALL that I am wait - we might miss that ALL in the middle of that statement if we read over it quickly. This gives us a little insight into how our psalmist found God as his refuge and rock. He didn't just give God a 'wee bit' of his attentiveness - he gave him his ALL. This is where so many of us miss the mark. We allow life's distractions to filter in and then we find ourselves weaker than we might like to be when facing the day's challenges. If you want to know God's greatness and goodness, you need only seek him with your WHOLE being.
Victory and honor await those whose hearts are not divided in their loyalty or attentiveness. Trust isn't accidental - it is purposeful. How do we learn to trust God? We get to know him well. How do we do that? We shelter in his presence long enough to come to understand how he works, hear his voice, and celebrate his goodness. The more we learn to do this, the more we will find our ALL isn't all that hard to give! Just sayin!
