In a personal way

The Spirit, not content to flit around on the surface, dives into the depths of God, and brings out what God planned all along. Who ever knows what you’re thinking and planning except you yourself? The same with God—except that he not only knows what he’s thinking, but he lets us in on it. God offers a full report on the gifts of life and salvation that he is giving us. We don’t have to rely on the world’s guesses and opinions. We didn’t learn this by reading books or going to school; we learned it from God, who taught us person-to-person through Jesus, and we’re passing it on to you in the same firsthand, personal way. (I Corinthians 2:10-13 MSG)

God's Spirit takes what we cannot understand with purely human knowledge and brings it into our hearts and minds so we can begin to not only comprehend it, but act upon it. All of God's scripture is meant to be actionable - either we do as it says, or we avoid what it says we are to avoid. There is nothing within scripture that is there by accident. It serves a purpose and we need God's Spirit to help us uncover that purpose. The most amazing thing is that God offers to explain his plans and purposes to us - he wants to be an 'open book' to us, but before he can, we need to actually 'open the book'!

The world works overtime to lay out plans and purposes someone would like us to follow. Advertisers lay out ads that will not only capture our eye but will appeal to our ego or entice our lust. Politicians lay out an 'agenda' for how they plan to make our country great again through appealing to our hopes and dreams of a better life with less of some stuff we don't like and more of the stuff we do like. News media paints pictures so we don't have to rely upon our imagination, but those pictures don't always paint the right or truthful picture. We need help understanding truth and God has provided the means by which we can do so - a tutor called the Holy Spirit.

The world guesses and has opinions about everything God does or doesn't do, don't they? We can either get behind them or reject them as sheer bunk. All the books that amass our library reference departments are nothing compared to the wisdom God's Spirit will impart when we get into the Word of God and begin to allow him to unfold to us the truths of God's greatest gift - grace through Jesus Christ, his Son. As we ingest his Word, we find our eyes are enlightened to the things of this world that are actually smoke screens that keep us from seeing God as he truly is. The world is good at putting up those screens, but God's Spirit is better at helping us to see through them.

God's intent is for us to have a personal connection with him. A connection must be maintained. If we neglect the electrical wiring from the power station to our homes, winds and weather will interrupt it. If we neglect the dams that hold back waters and create holding places for our daily water consumption, we will find drought overtakes our lands. If we neglect the Word of God, even for a short while, we won't be in a place where we can be 'actively taught' the things God wants for us to know. We might not think we need his Spirit's help today, but as we get into his Word, I bet we will see just how much we actually do need it! Just sayin!
