Information Overload or Knowledge?

T. S. Eliot posed a very thought-provoking question I would like for us to consider this morning: "Where is all the knowledge we lost with information?" It seems like we get more and more information, so much so that we could honestly declare we are on 'information overload', but where is the true 'knowledge' that was supposed to come with that information? Eliot's full quote is: " Where is the Life we have lost in living? Where is the wisdom we have lost in knowledge? Where is the knowledge we have lost in information? " Information overload is the difficulty we each have making a decision about how to proceed when we have too much information. We can demand more information, but it won't make the subject any clearer to us. Sometimes we have just enough information to make a wise decision, but that wisdom seems to fly out the window the more information we receive on a matter! If any of you needs wisdom, you should ask God for it. He will g...

A lesson in division

Tough question this morning - what, if anything, acts as a 'barometer' in your life, judging both your thoughts and the purposes of your heart? If you say it is the scripture, that would be good, but I need to ask you another question - how does having this 'barometer' affect your choices? The recent couple of days have turned chilly here in Arizona, moving the thermometer down from the mid-90's into the mid-70's. That is a big change that moved us from capris wearing weather to needing a small cover-up over you while lounging in the chair! I should have adapted my wardrobe selection to adjust to the weather shift, but do you know what I am wearing as I sit here this morning? Capris and a t-shirt - my usual casual attire. Despite the barometer clearly showing we were in for a significant weather change, I didn't adapt to the change. There are times when I ignore the weather barometer completely, so what would make me think I will always pay attention to the ...

Half-baked strategies

On a scale from 1-10, what would you say is your "Obedience Ratio"? Most days I would rank mine at the top of the scale, but I have some 'cheat days' that my "OR" is at the bottom of that scale! As I was listening to Sunday church online this weekend, do you know what I heard? You don't have to totally understand something to obey immediately. I don't totally understand how eating less carbs helps me lose weight, but I have seen the evidence when I put down the donut and take up a few carrot sticks instead! Obedience is really a matter of trust. When we trust in the right thing, we are more likely to make the right choices, making our "OR" higher! God has breathed life into all Scripture. It is useful for teaching us what is true. It is useful for correcting our mistakes. It is useful for making our lives whole again. It is useful for training us to do what is right. By using Scripture, the servant of God can be completely prepared to do ev...
